On Friday 16 May, a group of just under 20 Dr Challoner’s students - including myself - embarked on a long journey to Morocco for our Activity Week visit. After a tiring first day of travelling, we reached the starting location for our trek. We had a lovely meal and experienced the brilliant Moroccan culture for the first time before settling down to sleep - we’d need all the rest we could get for the journey awaiting us. For the next five days, we would be trekking in the Atlas Mountains, one of the largest mountain ranges in the whole of Africa.
We woke up early on Saturday, eager to start our hiking adventure. The next five days were incredible. Tough terrain, harsh conditions as well as the mental and physical challenges associated with such an undertaking weighed against our progress, but the rewarding feeling of overcoming these, combined with the beautiful scenery, fascinating culture and friendly locals, made this trip unforgettable. We tried new foods, learnt about traditions and met some truly amazing people - such as Muhammad, our wonderful tour guide.
After we reached journey’s end, we had time to reflect on our experience as well as visit the Marrakesh Markets to empty our wallets! Our final day travelling brought us back to Challoner’s on Friday evening, bringing our week-long trip to an end. We returned with not only a greater understanding of Morocco, but ourselves too, and even each other. Friendships strengthened, memories were made and a truly unforgettable time was had by all!
