Music
Music is an integral part of the life of the school and enjoys strong support from staff and students. All boys receive class music lessons in Years 7-9 and from then on there are options to study GCSE and A Level music. Two music teachers are employed to deliver the music curriculum in the classroom. Several other members of staff have musical expertise and support the musical activities in the school in a practical way. In addition, we have a large team of visiting music teachers, and we host ABRSM and Trinity music exams twice a year.
The Music Team is accommodated in a newly built Music block. Six new practice rooms have been built along with improved storage for resources and instruments, and an upgrading of the soundproofing in and around the building. The end result is a much improved facility which helps every Challoner’s student achieve their potential in music and follow their interests.
The department has a wide range of instruments for students to play and offers many musical groups to get involved in. Some of the activities also involve the participation of girls from Dr Challoner’s High School, with whom the school has a close and happy relationship. Rehearsals generally take place at lunchtime and after school (15.45 –17.00) on most days of the week. There is usually a performance of some kind every three weeks. These take place either in school, at the High School or in one of the local churches.
For a full list of current activities, please see here.
Students are also able to have individual music lessons at school.
